Why so many different types?
Here are some helpful tips.

Well, pins come in many different types, with different lengths, thickness, pinheads,
points and are made from different materials.
Any pin is just the sum of its parts.
  No one pin can successfully handle all fabrics and sewing techniques.

Use only the best pins.  
Buy the best.
If the pin gets bent, has a snag on it, dull or rusted--time to toss it!

If you want a pin that you can pick up with a magnet, avoid stainless steel and brass as they won't cling.

Never leave a pin in fabric for a long time. 
Nickel plating helps prevent steel pins from rusting.
