    Sashiko Patterns

Sashiko dates back in history to a time that we have no written records and no pieces of stitching
that historians can give an exact date or for that matter, a particular group of people responsible for
    its introduction.

It was thought that it originated 'out of necessity' to keep warm and to extend the use of the fabric
for as long as possible by mending, and reinforcing the fabric with stitching.
Over the centuries it has evolved from a rural domestic craft to the beautiful designs that you see below.
Perfected by the Japanese, Sashiko has become a popular form of embellishment for quilts,
    garments and accessories.

If you are interested in learning more about the history of Sashiko, the book:
Ultimate Sashiko Sourcebook has an extensive section on the history of Sashiko.  Sashiko is elegant in its simplicity.
    Sashiko is timeless.
Sashiko looks difficult but is really quick and easy to do. Follow the simple transfer and stitching techniques included in these Sashiko patterns
and you will be on your way to
creating beautiful pieces. Fabrics chosen need to be easy to needle---cotton, cotton and linen blends are great.
Check theses pages for some pre-stamped fabrics and for other fabrics to apply your own designs. Other Japanese fabrics to compliment your stitching can be found here.
